Samsung has started mass production of a 30 TB SSD, which will be the world’s largest solid state drive in terms of memory capacity available in the market.

Samsung was able to cram 30 TB of storage into the 2.5-inch form factor of solid state drives, further pushing the envelope in the development of SSD technology.

Samsung Breaks Own Record For Biggest Capacity SSD

In August 2015, Samsung unveiled the PM1633a, an SSD that then held the record as the highest capacity SSD, compared to the 8 TB to 10T B SSD products of Western Digital and Seagate at the time. Samsung started shipping the 16 TB SSD to customers in March 2016.

Samsung has now broken its own record with the announcement of the PM1643, an SSD with a memory capacity of 30.72 TB. Seagate

In a press release, Samsung said that it was able to achieve the breakthrough by combining 32 of its new 1 TB NAND flash packages, which are each comprised of 16 stacked layers of 512 GB V-NAND chips. The super-dense packages enable the storage of the equivalent of 5,700 full HD movie files, at 5 GB each, inside a device that measures only 2.5 inches.

“With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide,” said Samsung Electronics Executive VP for Memory Sales & Marketing Team Jaesoo Han in a statement.

Seagate actually unveiled a 60 TB SSD in August 2016. However, it used the bigger 3.5-inch form factor and has not yet moved out of its “demonstration technology” stage, despite the company claiming that it would launch last year.

There is still no word on when Samsung’s 30 TB SSD will go on sale and for how much. However, compared to Seagate’s 60 TB SSD, at least mass production has already started for the device. As for the price, the groundbreaking SSD is geared toward enterprises, so it will likely be too expensive for the regular consumer and will likely not make its way into laptops and desktop PCs anytime soon.

Samsung In The News

The current news on Samsung, however, mostly revolves around its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S9. There have been numerous leaks and reports on the highly anticipated smartphone, including rumors on the Galaxy S9 price and Galaxy S9 specifications.

Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at a special Unpacked event on Feb. 25, just before the start of this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
