Apple confirms a “limited number” of 13-inch MacBook Pro models sold between October 2016 and October 2017 might have erring batteries.
The company has activated a battery replacement program on April 20 that targets an issue with the non-Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro variant that causes its battery to expand.
As Apple details in its documentation, the program only covers newer MacBook models without the Touch Bar, as these are impacted by what seems to be a manufacturing flaw. Battery replacements are free under the program, provided the customer’s MacBook is eligible.
Apple: Expanding MacBook Batteries Not A Safety Issue
Apple didn’t specify the nature of the issue but did say it’s not a safety concern. It’s not uncommon for products with lithium-ion batteries to have flaws. Case in point: the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which remains one of the most iconic flubs in the history of smartphones and general consumer technology.
Battery expansion issues are nothing new in this arena, though they shouldn’t be downplayed either. Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most critical and sensitive components inside an electronics device, and when handled improperly, it could be life-threatening. Just look at the testimonies of Galaxy Note 7 owners.
How To Find My MacBook Serial Number
The program will include eligible MacBook models up to five years after the initial retail sale, hinting that it will continue until 2022. You can check if your MacBook Pro is included in the program by providing your device’s serial number on Apple replacement program webpage. To locate your serial number, click on the Apple logo on your Mac and then choose “About this Mac.”
Apple notes that the battery replacement program won’t extend the device’s warranty coverage. Owners who already paid for a battery replacement may contact Apple for a refund. Eligible MacBook Pro models may be taken to an Apple retail store or an authorized service provider to get the battery replaced. Apple recommends backing up the machine before starting the replacement process. Also, other issues that may impair the replacement of the battery must be addressed first before going to Apple for the replacement.
The non-Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro was unveiled in 2016 along with the Touch Bar models. The Touch Bar, for the uninitiated, is an OLED display strip that sits at the top of the keyboard layout and functions as a control panel of sorts for extra options. It adapts to whatever app is open: when typing a document or text, it displays a bunch of emoji. When editing pictures on Adobe Photoshop, it displays editing tools.
